Leider stellte sich dieses Heft als eines der schw\u00e4cheren heraus. Das Tagebuch von John Fowles zur Verfilmung von <i>The French Lieutenant\u2019s Woman<\/i> &#8211; ach, das hatte ich von John Irving besser (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.de\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0375503684\/qid=1091536138\/sr=1-1\/ref=sr_1_8_1\/028-6064564-1115739\"><i>My Movie Business<\/i><\/a>). Gaby Wood, die beschreibt, wie sie sich als Biografin von Lana Turner f\u00fchlt &#8211; Schauspieler-Leben haben doch eh kaum was mit der Kunstform Film zu tun. Schon interessanter: Thomas Keneally, der erz\u00e4hlt, wie ihn die Geschichte zu <i>Schindler\u2019s List<\/i> gefunden hat (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.granta.com\/extracts\/2135\">\u201eThe Handbag Studio\u201c<\/a>, steht auch online). Oder Andrew O&#8217;Hagan, der die H\u00f6lle schildert, durch die er zwei Jahre lang als Filmkritiker gegangen ist.<\/p>\n<p>Ein Essay aber hat mir so richtig gut gefallen, netterweise ist es online nachzulesen: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.granta.com\/extracts\/2139\">Adam Mars-Jones, \u201eQuiet, Please\u201c<\/a>. Er beginnt:<\/p>\n<p><i>I miss silence in the movies. Not silent movies\u2014the films so called were anything but, since they relied on live music from a piano pit or an orchestra to convey mood, momentum and sound effects. What I miss in films is silence, not only as a neutral medium, or even for its powers of contrast, but for the things from which music is debarred. There are things that only silence can express. <br \/>\nMusic in films can be as carefully chosen from sequence to sequence as wines to match the courses of a banquet\u2014or it can be sloshed about as casually as syrup or custard over institutional pudding. Film music can be stained glass or wallpaper. The classic directors in the past who are most associated with appreciating the power of music also had a complementary understanding of silence.
